Baby is measuring big, baby is measuring small – what does it mean?

|

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard “I’m going for a growth scan, the midwife is worried baby is too big, or the baby is too small.” Whether you have ever had a baby or not, I bet you can understand the anxiety that brings – is there something wrong?

Firstly let me say that it is absolutely the right thing to do for the midwife to make sure everything is ok with your baby. However, there are a few things to know that may help you feel less anxious…

  1. Different midwives measure your bump differently
  2. Your baby has growth spurts on the inside and the outside
  3. All pregnancies are measured at 40 weeks but your pregnancy may be longer or shorter so baby will grow at a different rate depending on how long they are going to be in there!

If you are sent for a growth scan, try to see it as a positive. You get to see baby again and your midwife is taking every precaution to ensure that baby is doing well.

It goes without saying that any twists and turns in pregnancy can be helped with hypnobirthing techniques, and the support of a qualified hypnobirthing teacher (me!). Anyone who books a course with me has access to support (and plenty of reassurance) from when the course starts to when baby is born – making any of these types of situations feel much less stressful.
