What is hypnobirthing – and how does it work?

If you’re expecting a baby and feeling a mix of excitement, nerves and maybe a little fear – you’re not alone. Birth can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure what to expect. That’s where hypnobirthing comes in.

Despite the name, hypnobirthing isn’t about being hypnotised or losing control. It’s a practical, science-based method of birth preparation that helps you feel calm, confident and in charge of your experience – whatever kind of birth you’re hoping for.

So, what is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal education that focuses on the mind–body connection. It teaches techniques like:

  • 🌬️ Deep, effective breathing
  • 🧘‍♀️ Guided relaxation
  • 🧠 Positive mindset and affirmations
  • 📚 Understanding how the body works in labour
  • 🗣️ Communicating with your birth team

The aim? To reduce fear and tension, which can interfere with the natural birth process, and instead create a sense of calm, focus and empowerment.

How does it work?

When you feel scared or anxious, your body produces adrenaline – the “fight or flight” hormone. This can slow labour down and increase discomfort. Hypnobirthing helps you switch to the body’s calm state by encouraging the release of oxytocin (the hormone that makes contractions, surges or waves effective) and endorphins (your body’s natural pain relief).

By practising regularly before birth, these tools become second nature – helping you stay grounded and relaxed when you need it most.

Is hypnobirthing only for natural or drug-free births?

Not at all. Hypnobirthing supports all types of birth – from home water births to planned caesareans and everything in between. It doesn’t promise a pain-free or “perfect” birth, but it does help you feel prepared, informed and empowered to make the right decisions for you and your baby.

What are the benefits?

Parents who use hypnobirthing often report:

  • Feeling more confident and less afraid
  • Shorter, smoother labours
  • Reduced need for pain relief or interventions
  • A stronger sense of control and calm
  • Partners feeling more involved and useful
